DragonForce, czyli zespół uznawany za pionierów ekstremalnego power metalu, już za kilka dni, bo 12 sierpnia, wystąpi w krakowskim Klubie Studio w ramach trasy promującej wydany wiosną tego roku album „Warp Speed ​​Warriors”. Korzystając z tej okazji umówiliśmy się na pogawędkę z uroczą basistką tej formacji, Alicią Vigil. Zapraszamy do lektury zapisu tej rozmowy!

MATT: Cześć Alicia! Minęły cztery miesiące od wydania nowej płyty DragonForce, „Warp Speed ​​Warriors”, która jest twoim pierwszym albumem z zespołem. Ekscytacja związana z premierą już opadła, czy nadal emocje w tobie buzują?

ALICIA: Zasadniczo Sam zaczął pisać ten album podczas covidu. ALICIA: To po prostu wyjątkowy proces. Nigdy wcześniej nie byłam w takim zespole, ale to naprawdę fajne. Zdecydowanie pierwszy raz nagrywałam z zespołem, w którym nie zbieramy się wszyscy razem w jednym miejscu. Ale nasz producent, Damien, mieszka tutaj w Los Angeles, więc miałam szczęście, że mogłam nagrywać z nim osobiście, i to sprawiło, że było to dla mnie większe przeżycie, niż gdybym po prostu nagrywała w domu i wysyłała swoich partii. MATT: Zdecydowanie! Po wysłuchaniu tego albumu jestem pewien, że świetnie się bawiliście nagrywając go, więc pozwól, że zadam ci kilka pytań dotyczących poszczególnych piosenek! Jestem dość zaintrygowany „Doomsday Party”, nie tylko dlatego, że gościnnie wystąpiła w nim Elize Ryd z Amaranthe, ale także z powodu oczywistego, przynajmniej dla mnie, nawiązania do Boney M w melodii. Czy możesz mi opowiedzieć historię stojącą za tą piosenką?

ALICIA: Zasadniczo doceniam DragonForce za to, że nieustannie próbują przekraczać granice metalu. Ta piosenka to to, co nazywamy disco metalem – jest bardzo funky i brzmi jak coś nowego. MATT: To jedna z najzabawniejszych piosenek, jakie ostatnio słyszałem. Bardzo mi się podoba!

ALICIA: O wow. To fajnie. Dziękuję!

MATT: Jest też cover Taylor Swift „Wildest Dreams”. Kto wpadł na ten szalony pomysł, żeby nagrać tę piosenkę?

ALICIA: To był pomysł Hermana. On uważa się „Swiftie” z powodu swojej córki. Ale wiesz, myślę, że to trochę podobny motyw, że po prostu chcą zrobić coś nieoczekiwanego i zmienić bardzo popową piosenkę w powermetalową piosenkę pop. I to wywołuje reakcję u ludzi. Ludzie mówią: „co to do cholery jest?!”. Ale to jest naprawdę świetne. Mam na myśli, że to chwytliwa piosenka i fajnie się ją gra na żywo.

ALICIA: Tak, naprawdę! MATT: Jesteś jedyną kobietą w zespole. Jak radzisz sobie z tymi wszystkimi facetami, którzy prawdopodobnie jarają się grami video i podobnymi rzeczami? Czy łatwo znajdujesz z nimi wspólny język?

ALICIA: Tak! Szczerze mówiąc, nawet o tym nie myślę. Tylko wtedy, gdy ktoś kiedykolwiek zauważy, że jestem jedyną kobietą. Naprawdę nie postrzegam siebie inaczej. Spędzamy razem czas i czuję, że jestem wśród przyjaciół. Po prostu świetnie się wspólnie bawimy.

MATT: To super! Wspomniałaś już o swoim zespole Vigil Of War, który reprezentuje nieco inny podgatunek metalu. Czy trudno było ci przejść z cięższych rzeczy na bardziej melodyjne, zabawne piosenki DragonForce?

ALICIA: Wywodzę się ze środowiska związanego z hard rockiem i melodyjnym punk metalem, więc granie speed/power metalu było czymś, czego wcześniej nie robiłam. Musiałam więc naprawdę rozbudować ramię basowe i nabrać tempa. Ale to uczyniło mnie lepszym muzykiem. I wiesz, bardzo lubię melodyjne kompozycje, a DragonForce to po prostu chwytliwe piosenki, każda jedna z nich. Uwielbiam harmonie i solówki gitarowe. MATT: W Vigil Of War jesteś też odpowiedzialna za wokal. Czy chciałabyś robić to samo w DragonForce? Przynajmniej okazjonalnie?

MATT: Szczerze mówiąc, nie uważam, żeby twój głos był taki zły. Wręcz przeciwnie, jest naprawdę świetny. Słuchałem dużo Vigil Of War przed tym wywiadem, żeby sprawdzić twoje rzeczy i myślę, że są naprawdę zacne!

ALICIA: Och, dziękuję, doceniam to!

MATT: Proszę bardzo! Więc jak planujesz połączyć obowiązki w obu zespołach w dłuższej perspektywie?

MATT: To fajnie! Zanim zajęłaś się muzyką, zaczęłaś karierę w branży artystycznej, grając w kilku programach telewizyjnych i filmach. Czy planujesz do tego wrócić?

ALICIA: Rzeczywiście, trochę grałam jako dziecko. To było fajne, ale w sumie to nie mam na koncie żadnej naprawdę wielkiej roli. Ale czuję, że teledyski są moim sposobem na to, by połączyć wszystko, co kocham: muzykę i aktorstwo, i po prostu taką swoistą teatralność sztuki. Więc kto wie, może kiedyś do tego powrócę, ale teraz, mając dość ograniczony czas w ciągu dnia, wiesz, wolałam skupić się na muzyce jako mojej głównej pasji. MATT: Trzymam zatem za to kciuki! Wspomniałaś już o teledyskach, które są bardzo ważną częścią wizerunku DragonForce. Jak ci się podoba nagrywanie tych zabawnych obrazków z chłopakami z DragonForce? Kto wpada na najwięcej pomysłów?

ALICIA: Myślę, że Herman jest głównym pomysłodawcą do spółki z reżyserem, z którym pracujemy. Tak czy siak, to zdecydowanie jedna z moich ulubionych części bycia w zespole, po prostu dlatego, że wszyscy jesteśmy takimi jajcarzami, i w ten sposób możemy to pokazać. Wiesz, jeśli słyszysz „zespół metalowy”, to myślisz o czymś poważniejszym w metalu i wszystkim, co się z nim wiąże. Ale w DragonForce jesteśmy po prostu żartownisiami, jak już wspomniałam, i w większości naszych teledysków to widać i to jest po prostu fajne. Myślę, że teledyski naprawdę reprezentują charakter tego zespołu i dzięki nim można się co nieco o nas dowiedzieć. To świetna sprawa.

MATT: Kilka tygodni temu opublikowaliście nową piosenkę zatytułowaną „A Draco Tale”, której nie było na albumie wydanym w marcu. Czy możesz mi opowiedzieć historię stojącą za tą piosenką?

ALICIA: Tak! Producenci „Brawl Stars” zwrócili się do Hermana i wiesz, to była naprawdę fajna współpraca! Właściwie musieliśmy nagrać większość piosenki, kiedy byliśmy na tej ostatniej trasie po USA, ponieważ to była sprawa na ostatnią chwilę, dosłownie. Na szczęście udało mi się nagrać partię basu kilka dni po powrocie do domu z trasy. Ale zmontowaliśmy to naprawdę szybko. Nakręciliśmy teledysk pomiędzy koncertami, mieliśmy jeden dzień wolnego w Los Angeles, a potem mieliśmy grać w San Francisco, więc nakręciliśmy go dzień przed koncertem w San Francisco. To znaczy, to było szalone, ale to była naprawdę miła współpraca. Szczerze mówiąc, nie miałam pojęcia, jak popularna jest ta gra! Myślę, że zyskaliśmy wielu nowych fanów i to jest świetne!

MATT: To naprawdę fajny kawałek! Cóż, podczas całej twojej kadencji w zespole, trwającej już ponad cztery lata, byliście już dwa razy w Polsce. Musisz mieć już zatem jakieś wspomnienia z wizyt w moim kraju. Które wspomnienie z Polski jest twoim ulubionym?

ALICIA: Byliśmy w Warszawie zaledwie kilka miesięcy temu i to zdecydowanie była jedna z najlepszych publiczności, jaką mieliśmy w Europie. Było was naprawdę mnóstwo i to było szalone. To było ciasne, pełne pomieszczenie. Było tam naprawdę gorąco. Pamiętam, że bardzo się pociłam, ale wszyscy, pomimo gorąca, po prostu dalej dawali z siebie wszystko. I to była świetna zabawa. Więc cieszę się, że teraz zagramy w Krakowie w sierpniu!

MATT: Tak, dokładnie! Wielu moich znajomych przyjeżdża do Krakowa, żeby was zobaczyć i sam też zrobię wszystko, żeby do nich dołączyć. Ten koncert będzie trochę inny niż ten w Warszawie, ponieważ wtedy byliście w trasie z Amaranthe jako co-headlinerzy, a tym razem będziecie główną gwiazdą. Czy ten występ będzie dłuższy niż ten w Warszawie? Czego możemy się po nim spodziewać?

ALICIA: Tak, sądzę, że występ będzie dłuższy, ponieważ ostatnim razem zdecydowanie musieliśmy trochę skrócić nasz set ze względu na ten status co-headlinerów, zresztą tak samo, jak Amaranthe. DragonForce, a band considered pioneers of extreme power metal, will perform at the Krakow Studio Club in a few days, on August 12, as part of a tour promoting the album “Warp Speed ​​​​Warriors” released this spring. We took advantage of this opportunity to chat with the lovely bassist of this band, Alicia Vigil. We invite you to read the transcript of this conversation!

MATT: Hi Alicia! It's been four months since the release of DragonForce's new album, “Warp Speed Warriors”, which is your first record with the band. Has the excitement connected with the premiere already subsided, or are you still on a high?

ALICIA: You know, I still feel like I'm on a high from it. I mean, time has gone by really quickly, so it still feels like new and it feels good to play the new songs live and have some videos come out for it. So yeah, it's been great!

MATT: OK, so could you tell me what the process of creating the album was like? First of all, did Herman and Sam allow the others, including you, to have a say – because they are known for being the main contributors to all the DragonForce albums?

ALICIA: Basically, Sam started writing this during covid. We're all spread out across the world – Herman and I live here in Los Angeles, and then the other guys live in the UK and Europe, so it's not like we can really get together and write. So basically, Sam took the initiative to write the entire album. And then, when we did our parts, we got to add our own elements to it. I can put in some cool bass fills and a little cool rhythm and all that. So they do allow room for our own creativity within our own parts, but the actual core of the songs were written by Sam. But yeah, I've been touring with the band for almost five years, so it feels good to finally record with them, definitely.

MATT: You've already mentioned the fact that you guys are all quite scattered around the world. Does it make the recording and rehearsals and everything else connected to being in a band difficult for you?

ALICIA: It's just a unique process. I've never had a band like that before, but it's really cool. It was definitely the first time I recorded for a band that we weren't all there together. So our producer, Damien, he actually lives here in LA, so I was lucky enough to just record with him in person. So that kind of felt more real to me than just recording from home and sending in my parts. I think that's what Herman did and Mark did. I prefer going to a real place, a real studio, to do it. But yeah, we don't rehearse. We just kind of show up and play the shows and you know, we hang out on tour and that's pretty much, you know, when I get to see the band. So it's different, but I love it. And I still get to spend a lot of time with them on the road. So it's just a unique way of being in a band.

MATT: Definitely! After listening to this album, I'm pretty sure you guys had a lot of fun recording it, so let me ask you a few questions regarding the songs! I'm quite intrigued by “Doomsday Party”, not only because it includes the guest appearance of Elize Ryd from Amaranthe, but also because of the obvious, for me at least, reference to Boney M in the melodic part. So can you tell me the story behind this song?

ALICIA: So basically, I appreciate DragonForce for the fact that they're constantly trying to break the boundaries of metal. So this song is what we call disco metal – it's very funky and something that they've never done before. And yeah, it's a lot of fun. It's one of my favorite songs to play live just because the bass parts are so funky and different, and the video was definitely my favorite to do. We had a bunch of dancers in it. We all got to be different characters and I was the thrash metal character. It was a lot of fun. But I think they just kind of wanted to do something different and make it fun. And yeah, people either love it or hate it, and that's also a good thing, probably.

MATT: It's one of the funniest songs I've heard recently. I like it a lot!

ALICIA: Oh wow. That's cool. Thank you!

MATT: So there's also a cover of Taylor Swift's “Wildest Dreams”. Who came up with this crazy idea to do that song?

ALICIA: That was actually Herman. He claims himself as a “Swiftie” because of his daughter. But you know, I think it's kind of on a similar theme that they just want to do something unexpected and change a very pop song into a power metal pop song. And it gets a reaction out of people. People are like, “What the hell is this?!”. But it's kind of awesome. I mean, it's a catchy song and it's fun to play live.

MATT: As I've already mentioned, it's been four months since the release of the album, so after that time, you must have probably chosen your favorite song out of this fantastic stuff you put on there. So could you tell me which one it is and why?

ALICIA: I guess “Burning Heart” is my favorite. I think it's really catchy. You know, it's one of the fast songs on the album and I get to do a little bass solo, which is cool. “Space Marine Corp” is also a favorite of mine, with its funny tone.

MATT: As you've already mentioned, you joined the band almost five years ago. So was it such a crazy ride, so far, as it seems?

ALICIA: Yeah, really! [laughter] I mean, I have been playing in my own band and other bands for many years and this is definitely a dream come true to be able to tour and play to big audiences and have great bandmates that are fun to hang out with. I mean, it's everything I've always wanted. So yeah, it's been crazy! We're going to be doing our festival season coming up. And that's always one of my favorite things to do just because it's just the coolest experience. You play for thousands of people and get to see a ton of bands in one day. It's awesome.

MATT: You are the only lady in the band. So how do you cope with all these guys, who are probably driven by video games and everything? Do you find common language easily?

ALICIA: Yeah! I mean, honestly, I don't even think about it. It's only when someone ever points out that I'm the only woman. I don't really view myself any differently. I feel like we hang out and it's just like they're my friends, you know what I mean? Yeah, it's just a fun time.

MATT: That's cool! So you've already mentioned your very own band Vigil Of War which represents a little bit different subgenre of metal. So was it difficult for you to switch from heavier stuff to the more melodic, fun songs of DragonForce?

ALICIA: I come from a rock and melodic metal/punk background. So to do speed/power metal was something I hadn't really done before. So I had to really build up my bass arm and get my speed up. But it's made me a better musician. And, you know, I'm all about melody and DragonForce is just catchy songs, every song. I love the guitar harmonies and the guitar solos. I mean, it's super fun and right up my alley, but definitely it was a little bit of a different genre than I was used to. Still, it's been awesome!

MATT: You also sing in Vigil Of War. Would you like to do the same in DragonForce? At least partially?

ALICIA: No, no, no! [laughter] Mark is a way better singer than me. I have my range and Mark can just go way beyond that. So I'm definitely, totally happy just playing bass and backing vocals. I cannot sing power metal!

MATT: Honestly, I don't think your voice is that bad. On the opposite, it's really great. I've listened to a lot of Vigil Of War before this interview, to check out your stuff, and I think it's cool!

ALICIA: Oh, thank you, I appreciate it!

MATT: You're welcome! So, how do you plan to combine the duties in both bands in the long run?

ALICIA: It's a nice balance, because with my band, I sing and play bass, and I also basically run the entire thing myself. So I book our shows and plan everything. So it's nice to have that outlet, but then also have the outlet of just playing bass and showing up. And you know, Herman and Sam are taking care of everything in DragonForce, so we can just play great shows and that's it. It's a good balance because it's a little bit different for both acts.

MATT: Did you have any situations so far where, you know, you had to say to someone, “well, I can't do it that day because I'm playing with the other band”, or something like that?

ALICIA: No, I mean, it's not too bad, because since I do book my own shows, I just book around DragonForce's schedule. And luckily my bandmates are all cool and understanding, so it's quite easy.

MATT: That's cool! Before getting into music, you started your career in the art industry by starring in some TV shows and movies. Do you plan to come back to that?

ALICIA: I guess I did a little bit of acting as a kid. It was so fun, but I didn't do anything that cool or anything. But I kind of feel like music videos are my outlet to do that because, you know, it combines everything I love: music and acting and just the theatrics of everything. So I feel like maybe at some point in life I'll do it again, but as of now, just with the time in the day that I have, you know, I got to focus on music as my main passion. But yeah, it was a fun thing to do as a kid.

MATT: I'd say that it's a similar path like that one taken by Taylor Momsen, for example, because she also played in the movies and TV series back in the days, but now she's concentrated mainly on music. Maybe you guys should go on a tour together!

ALICIA: I would love to! Yeah, I think Vigil of War and The Pretty Reckless touring together would be a great idea. I mean, I'll go on tour with DragonForce and them too. Either way, I would absolutely love to tour with Taylor and her band. I think she's great.

MATT: Fingers crossed for you, then! Well, you've already mentioned the videos, which are a very important part of the DragonForce image. So how do you like recording those funny pieces with the guys with DragonForce? Who brings up the most ideas?

ALICIA: I think mostly Herman comes up with the ideas with the director that we've been working with. Still, they're definitely one of my favorite parts of being in the band, just because we're all such goofballs. And we get to showcase that, I think. You know, if you hear the first thing, “metal band”, you kind of think of it more as a serious aspect to metal and everything connected with it. But in DragonForce, we're just goofballs, as I said, and in most of our videos you get to see that and it's just fun. I think music videos really showcase what a band is all about, and you get to learn more about them. It's great stuff.

MATT: Just a few weeks ago, you guys released a new song called “A Draco Tale”, which was not included in the album back in March. So can you tell me the story behind this song?

ALICIA: Yeah. So the producers of “Brawl Stars” approached Herman, and you know, what a cool collaboration! We actually had to record most of the song while we were on this last US tour, because it was a last minute thing, like literally. I luckily was able to record my bass part a couple days after I got home from the tour. But we put it together really fast. We shot the video in between our tour, we had one day off in LA and then we were going to be playing in San Francisco, so we shot it the day before a San Francisco show. I mean, it was crazy, but it was such a fun collaboration and I had no idea how big this game was, to be honest. I think we've gotten a lot of new fans and it's awesome.

MATT: It's really, really awesome! Well, during your whole four year run with the band, you've already been in Poland twice. So you must have gathered some memories during these visits. Which memory from Poland is your favorite?

ALICIA: We were just in Warsaw a couple months ago, and that was definitely one of the best crowds that we had in Europe. I mean, you guys really showed up, it was crazy. It was a tight, packed room. It was really hot in there. I remember sweating a lot, but everyone, despite the heat, just continued to give full energy. And that was a lot of fun. So I'm excited we're gonna be playing in Krakow again in August!

MATT: Yes, exactly! A lot of my friends are coming to Krakow to see you and I'll do my best to join them, too. That show will be a little bit different than the Warsaw show, because back then, you were on a double headline tour with Amaranthe, and this time you will be the main headliner. So would that show be longer than that one in Warsaw? And what can we expect from it?

ALICIA: Yeah, I believe it should be longer, because we definitely had to cut our set down a little bit because of the co-headline situation. Same with Amaranthe. But yeah, I'm very excited. So hopefully you can expect some new songs being added to the setlist. I don't even know what our set list is yet, the guys always decide at the last minute, so it'll be a surprise for me too.

MATT: Well, this interview inevitably comes to an end. So would you like to say a few words to your loyal Polish fans?

ALICIA: Yes, I love the Polish fans and I can't wait to come back very soon in August. And yeah, DragonForce loves Poland. So thank you for everything and see you in Krakow!
